The Bikini Explosion

The bikini is a women’s two-piece swimsuit that covers the chest and groin regions. The modern bikini was launched by a French engineer called Louis Reard in 1946. Originally it was considered risqué but the two piece design in fact came from ancient times. The most primitive form of the bikini, as cited by Wikipedia, initially appeared from around 350BCE to 1700BCE. Bikinis appear in ancient Roman mosaics and murals, signifying they had been popular as swimming costumes amongst Roman women. Women wearing bikinis appear on ancient Greek urns, ancient Sicilian floor mosaics, and statues from Pompeii. Archaeologists, additionally, have discovered Minoan wall paintings, about 1600BCE depicting a two-piece design exceptionally alike to the modern bikini. Read more
